HELENA 鈥揘ew emergency fishing regulations are in place for the Big Hole, Beaverhead and Ruby rivers.The Montana Fish and Wildlife stanley cup Commission adopted the new regulations during its June 8 meeting [lnks.gd]. These restrict stanley cup ions limit angling during the brown trout spawning season and harvest in some stretches of the rivers.Trout abundances in several areas of the three rivers have steadily declined since 2011 and are at or near historical lows [lnks.gd]. Meanwhile, fishing pressure in these areas has increased. The emergency fishing regulations aim to be responsive to fish populations in accordance with Montanas draft statewide fisheries mana stanley cup gement plan.The current fishing regulations for the three rivers are as follows:Big Hole RiverEntire riverCatch-and-release for Arctic graylingHeadwaters to Dickie BridgeCombined trout: five daily and in possessionDickie Bridge to the mouthOpen April 1 through Sept. 30Catch-and-release onlyArtificial lures and single-pointed hooks only. No treble or double hooks. Anglers may remove treble or double hooks from the lure and replace them with a single hook, or the shanks may be cut off the other hook points to leave a single hook. Environmental groups are suing the Flathead National Forest, s jordan aying its new forest management plan doesnt go far enough to protect the iconic threatened species that depend on vast swaths of natural habitat.WildEarth Guardians, Western Watersheds Project, Swan View Coalition and Friends of the Wild Swan sued the Flathead National Forest and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week over what they call an insufficient environmental analysis that led to a less-protective forest management plan approved in February 2019.Theyre asking the court to require the Flathead National Forest to reinstate the previous plan, published in 1986 until the managers correct all the flaws in the analysis, which the lawsuit says are many.
